MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Federal Government and UNICEF unveil a $406,000 reconstructed Central Cold Chain Store in Borno State, restoring vaccine security after devastating floods.
The facility, destroyed during the September 2024 floods, now safeguards immunisation supplies for all 27 local government areas.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare Muhammed Ali Pate, represented by NPHCDA Executive Director Dr Muyi Aina, describes the project as a symbol of resilience.
“We rebuilt it bigger, better and more resilient,” Aina says. “The facility is solar powered, spacious and designed to protect vaccines long-term.”
UNICEF Maiduguri Field Office Chief Francis Butchi says funding comes from Germany and Canada, with nearly one million vaccine doses restored.
The upgraded store strengthens outbreak preparedness and supports zero-dose reduction, particularly in hard-to-reach communities.
