ABUJA, Nigeria – The Central Bank of Nigeria has renewed warnings against naira abuse, cautioning offenders they face fines or jail terms under the CBN Act.
Speaking at the Abuja International Trade Fair, CBN officials said a nationwide sensitisation campaign is underway to discourage spraying, mutilating, or defacing the national currency.
“The naira is not just a means of exchange; it is a symbol of our national identity,” the Bank said. “Abuse of the naira erodes confidence, shortens its lifespan, and costs Nigeria billions in replacement.”
Under current laws, offenders risk fines of up to ₦50,000 or six months imprisonment.
Officials stressed that protecting the naira is critical for safeguarding both the economy and Nigeria’s image. The campaign will extend nationwide to reinforce respect for the currency.
