Nigeria House of Representatives
ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s lawmakers summon the head of the Rural Electrification Agency to explain accountability concerns surrounding billions in public funds.
The House Committee on Renewable Energy directs Managing Director Abba Aliyu to appear in person on March 2 after he fails to attend a tense investigative hearing in Abuja on Wednesday.
Committee chairman Afam Ogene warns that parliamentary oversight is not optional, citing constitutional powers to probe public spending. Lawmakers criticise Aliyu’s absence as disrespectful, with some calling for arrest warrants if non-compliance persists.
“We are elected to hold public officers accountable,” Ogene says.
REA officials apologise, insisting the absence is not deliberate, but lawmakers remain firm as scrutiny intensifies over rural electrification targets amid widespread energy poverty.
