LAGOS, Nigeria – Two people are killed after two fully loaded container trucks collide along the busy Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos, authorities say on Thursday.
The crash occurred at Mile 2, Cele inward, a major freight corridor linking Lagos ports to the rest of the country, triggering hours of traffic disruption.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirms that one of the victims is a truck driver, while the second is believed to be a pedestrian who strays into the restricted corridor.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq says rescue teams extricate the trapped driver from the mangled cabin, while another victim is recovered from beneath one of the articulated vehicles.
Emergency responders from Lagos State Emergency Management Agency support the operation as police secure the scene and manage crowd control.
“Traffic movement is gradually restored after the evacuation of the victims and damaged vehicles,” LASTMA says.
Investigators hand the case over to the police to determine the cause of the collision, with early reports suggesting that one truck rams into a stationary vehicle.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki urges articulated truck operators to observe speed limits and safety rules, especially during night operations.
The incident adds to growing concerns over fatal truck accidents on Lagos highways, often linked to speeding, fatigue and poor vehicle maintenance.
Authorities call on motorists to obey traffic instructions as cleanup operations continue.
