Nigeria First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu
Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, urges traditional and religious leaders to mobilise communities in support of the Federal Government’s National Community Food Bank programme, warning that no eligible family must be excluded.
Speaking on Tuesday at the National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health 2026 at the State House in Abuja, Mrs. Tinubu says government success depends on grassroots trust and moral authority that traditional and faith institutions command.
“We will be needing a lot of support from you to raise awareness and sensitise households, so no eligible family is left behind,” she tells the gathering of emirs, obas, bishops and clerics.
The programme, developed with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, will operate through primary health centres nationwide. Caregivers of children under six will receive nutrition counselling and food vouchers redeemable for locally sourced food.
Coordinating Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate describes the initiative as urgent, citing alarming child malnutrition rates.
“Almost 40 per cent of our children have stunted growth,” he says. “If malnutrition starts in the womb, the damage can be lifelong.”
