KANO, Nigeria – A devastating fire at Singer Market in Kano destroys property valued at more than ₦5 billion, affects over 1,000 businesses and leaves seven people missing, market officials say.
The Chairman of Singer Market, Junaid Zakari, tells reporters on Sunday that the blaze ranks among the worst tragedies in the market’s history. He says four residential buildings housing small-scale businesses are completely razed, with goods and equipment lost beyond recovery.
Zakari confirms that seven people remain unaccounted for as investigations continue to determine their whereabouts. Emergency responders and security agencies, he says, are working to establish the cause of the inferno.
Several traders recount massive losses. Isa Abubakar, a shop owner, says he loses goods worth more than ₦200 million. “From God we come, to Him we shall return,” he says.
Zakari commends Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for visiting the scene while the fire is still raging, describing the gesture as a sign of solidarity. Authorities have yet to officially confirm the cause of the fire.
