YENAGOA, Nigeria – Police in Bayelsa State arrest a 60-year-old man following an improvised explosive device (IED) blast at the state secretariat, prompting the evacuation of more than 6,000 workers.
Commissioner of Police Iyamah says Pentecost Elijah, from Otuan community, is detained at the scene after the explosion occurs around 6am.
Explosive ordnance experts safely detonate a second device during a security sweep, with authorities confirming no casualties or damage to government property.
“The situation is under control and normalcy has returned,” the commissioner says, adding that investigations are ongoing.
The suspect remains in custody and will be charged after questioning. The state government orders a temporary work suspension as a precaution.
