KANO, Nigeria – At least seven people die and 70 others sustain injuries after a commercial trailer crash along Hadejia Road in Kano State on Sunday morning, Nigerian road safety officials confirm.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the lone accident occurs at about 8:35 a.m. at Kwanar Danja when a DAF trailer conveying passengers alongside goods loses control while speeding.
“A total of 105 persons are involved in the crash. Seven victims die instantly, 70 sustain varying degrees of injuries, while 28 escape unhurt,” Kano State Sector Commander Idris Muhammed-Lawal says in a statement issued on Monday by FRSC spokesperson Abdullahi Labaran.
FRSC operatives respond within five minutes of receiving a distress call, cordon off the area and begin rescue operations, the statement adds.
Muhammed-Lawal attributes the crash to excessive speed and the “dangerous and illegal practice of mixing passengers with cargo in goods vehicles,” stressing that road conditions are good at the time of the incident.
“The crash involves only one vehicle. Speeding and loss of control remain the primary causes,” he says.
Injured passengers are evacuated to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, General Hospital Gezawa, Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital and Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Kano.
The sector commander expresses condolences to families of the deceased and urges commercial drivers to obey traffic rules.
“Drivers must desist from reckless driving and the conveyance of passengers in trailers. Strict compliance with safety regulations saves lives,” he warns.
Road safety advocates say the incident highlights persistent enforcement gaps despite repeated warnings against unsafe haulage practices across Nigeria’s highways.
