IBADAN, Nigeria – The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has urged the federal government to implement the 30–35 per cent affirmative action policy for women’s representation in engineering projects.
National President, Dr. Adebisi Osim made the call in Ibadan on Monday at a news briefing ahead of APWEN’s 2025 International Conference and Annual General Meeting.
The conference, themed Revitalising Nigeria’s Manufacturing Sector Through Innovative Engineering Solutions, will run from 22–26 September.
Osim stressed that engineering innovation can transform Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, adding that increased STEM funding in the national budget would boost technological discoveries, create jobs, and drive innovation.
“APWEN programmes have empowered thousands of girls, bridged the gap between industry and academia, and strengthened STEM interest by 60 per cent,” she said.
She also urged policymakers and philanthropists to support APWEN’s 2026 initiatives, including a women’s engineering start-up fund.
The conference will bring together industry leaders, experts, and engineers to discuss solutions for revitalising manufacturing, gender inclusion, and national development.
“Youths must embrace engineering careers and be part of the change Nigeria needs,” Osim said.
