AKURE, Nigeria – The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) announces it will not admit students into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The suspension affects all categories of applicants, including Direct Entry candidates, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the university’s Registrar, C. O. Adeleye.
FUTA advises candidates who selected the institution for MBBS during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration to immediately seek alternative universities.
“The Federal University of Technology, Akure will not be admitting students into its MBBS programme for the 2026/2027 academic session,” the statement reads.
“Candidates who selected FUTA should urgently change their institution of choice for the MBBS programme.”
As of the time of filing this report, the university provides no official reason for the suspension, raising uncertainty among prospective applicants.
Education analysts say such pauses often relate to accreditation requirements, staffing ratios, or infrastructure compliance set by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), although FUTA has not confirmed any of these factors.
The announcement comes amid heightened competition for limited medical school slots nationwide, as demand for healthcare training continues to outpace institutional capacity.
Prospective students are urged to monitor official communications from JAMB and FUTA for further updates.
