LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Taskforce launches a renewed enforcement operation along the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, confiscating more than 50 commercial motorcycles and arresting 10 vehicles for traffic violations.
The operation was confirmed on Sunday through video footage shared on X by Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to Gawat, the exercise targets the enforcement of the state’s ban on motorcycles operating on highways, the arrest of motorists driving against traffic, and the removal of illegal roadside structures.
“Over 50 Okadas are confiscated for violating Lagos State traffic laws, while 10 vehicles are arrested and will be charged to court for one-way driving,” Gawat writes. “Enforcement continues.”
The operation also includes the dismantling of shanties and makeshift structures erected along the coastal corridor, which authorities say obstruct drainage systems, pedestrian movement and ongoing infrastructure works.
The renewed crackdown aligns with earlier commitments by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who confirms sustained clearance operations in the Lakowe axis of the corridor.
“Our teams are actively removing illegal shanties, roadside trading points and structures that compromise safety and environmental standards,” Wahab says.
Officials say the enforcement drive responds to rising public complaints over reckless motorcycle riding and traffic infractions, particularly along major highway corridors.
The Lagos State Government maintains that the exercise is necessary to restore order, improve road safety and protect critical infrastructure tied to the multi-billion-naira coastal road project.
