BORNO, Nigeria – Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully foiled an attack by ISWAP insurgents on a military formation in Azir, Damboa LGA, neutralising multiple terrorists with support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
The assault, launched in the early hours of Friday, saw militants attempt to breach the perimeter of a Forward Operating Base (FOB). Troops repelled the attackers with coordinated ground fire while NAF air assets struck fleeing insurgents.
Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama described the engagement as “a prolonged firefight lasting over an hour, forcing the insurgents into a disorderly retreat.” Several weapons, including a 60mm mortar, RPGs, and heavy machine gun rounds, were recovered.
Military sources confirm that additional aerial surveillance tracked fleeing terrorists, who were engaged in successive precision airstrikes, degrading their operational capacity in the region.
“The operation achieved its intended effect, with many terrorists neutralised and their ability to launch further attacks significantly reduced,” said a military source.
Despite some troop vehicles sustaining minor fire damage, the FOB maintained full operational control throughout the engagement, highlighting effective coordination between ground and air forces.
