LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos authorities have arrested 281 street urchins in a week-long crackdown, part of an intensified campaign to reclaim public spaces and enhance road safety.
The operation targeted vulnerable individuals known locally as Omotaku, conducting sweeps across high-traffic zones on both Lagos Island and the Mainland.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that all suspects have been arraigned in court. “This operation ensures public spaces remain safe and accessible for Lagosians,” Wahab said on his official X handle on Saturday.
Locations targeted include Lekki Phase 1, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Ajah Expressway, Bourdillon, Yaba, Surulere, Lagos Island, Palmgrove, Ojuelegba, and Costain. Authorities emphasise that the campaign also promotes environmental standards by discouraging street begging.
Residents are urged to report street urchins or other public nuisances through hotlines 09137555111 or 09138555111, reinforcing community participation in maintaining law and order.
This crackdown aligns with Lagos State’s ongoing initiatives to curb vagrancy and maintain public safety. Officials note the operation is part of broader measures aimed at reducing traffic hazards and ensuring pedestrians and motorists are not endangered by unregulated street activities.
“Lagosians deserve safe, orderly streets. This operation is a step toward reclaiming our spaces,” Wahab said
