LAGOS, Nigeria – The United States delivers fresh military supplies to Nigeria, reinforcing renewed counterterrorism cooperation as Abuja intensifies operations against insurgents, bandits and transnational criminal networks.
The delivery is confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which oversees U.S. military activities across the continent. In a statement posted on X, AFRICOM says the equipment is formally handed over to Nigerian authorities in Abuja.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja,” AFRICOM states. “This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasises our shared security partnership.”
While AFRICOM does not disclose the type or quantity of the equipment, security analysts describe the move as a clear signal of Washington’s continued strategic interest in Nigeria’s stability, particularly as violence linked to terrorism and organised crime escalates across parts of the country.
The latest delivery follows U.S. military airstrikes carried out roughly two weeks ago in northern Nigeria, notably in Sokoto State. According to security sources, the strikes target Islamic State–linked fighters accused of collaborating with the Lakurawa jihadist group and armed bandit networks operating in the region.
The renewed military engagement comes amid recent diplomatic tensions between both countries. U.S. President Donald Trump earlier describes violence against Christians in Nigeria as “genocide,” a statement that draws a swift rejection from Nigerian officials.
The Nigerian government insists the country’s security crisis is complex and driven by criminality, extremism, and governance challenges rather than religious persecution.
Defence and foreign policy observers say the delivery underscores a pragmatic security relationship, even as political rhetoric occasionally strains diplomatic ties.
They add that sustained cooperation will depend on transparency, civilian protection and Nigeria’s ability to translate external military support into long-term stability.
