ENUGU, Nigeria – Health authorities in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State launch a renewed immunisation campaign aimed at eradicating measles and polio, signalling a tougher stance against vaccine-preventable diseases in rural communities.
The initiative was unveiled on Thursday during the inauguration of a specialist immunisation coordination committee in Ogbede. Council Chairman, Dr Eric Odo, says his administration is determined to end avoidable child deaths by prioritising routine and supplemental immunisation coverage.
“Our focus is to eliminate preventable fatalities among our children,” Odo says. “Failure to immunise a child exposes not just that child, but the entire community, especially vulnerable groups, to avoidable health risks.”
The programme targets persistent gaps in rural healthcare delivery by promoting direct engagement with families, traditional leaders and caregivers to address vaccine hesitancy. Health officials say misinformation and access challenges remain key barriers to full immunisation uptake in hard-to-reach settlements.
Facilitator Collins Onyia commends the council’s leadership, stressing that sustained parental awareness is essential to the campaign’s success. “Refusing vaccination today can have serious health consequences in the future,” he warns.
