LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government enforces the removal of roadside markets along the Ikotun–Igando Road, citing public safety, traffic congestion and environmental degradation as core concerns.
The enforcement exercise, carried out on Saturday, affects Ikotun Main Market, Igando Market and several informal trading clusters occupying road setbacks and pedestrian walkways in Alimosho Local Government Area. The operation takes place on December 20, 2025.
Confirming the development via his official X handle, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, says the action targets illegal occupation of public infrastructure and indiscriminate waste disposal that endanger residents.
“This operation is necessary to restore order, improve traffic flow and uphold Lagos State sanitation and environmental laws,” Wahab states.
He explains that roadside trading obstructs drainage systems, worsens flooding risks and compromises pedestrian safety, particularly along high-traffic corridors such as Ikotun–Igando Road.
The commissioner adds that the operation is jointly executed by Project WISE, led by Bayo Oladeji, and the Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste services under Tunde Sulaiman.
Wahab reiterates the state government’s zero tolerance for environmental infractions and warns traders against returning to cleared locations.
“Lagos will continue to take decisive action against activities that undermine public safety and environmental sustainability,” he says.
The government stresses that similar enforcement exercises will continue across the state as part of broader efforts to maintain a clean, orderly and liveable megacity.
