ONDO, Nigeria — Security agencies in Ondo State have deployed round-the-clock surveillance teams to boarding schools amid increased concerns about potential attacks by armed groups.
The measure coincides with the arrest of three suspected kidnappers in the Akure North Local Government Area.
Commander Adetunji Adeleye, head of the Ondo State Security Network—popularly called Amotekun—announced the coordinated actions on Tuesday, noting that officers have visited numerous schools in the past week, particularly those located near forests, boundary communities, and peripheral towns.
“In response to recent outcry over kidnappings, the corps has commenced full enhanced patrol of all boarding schools in the state,” Adeleye said. He added that officers have expanded their traditional “ember month” operations at border points to deter criminal activity before the year’s end.
The three arrested suspects — Olamiju, Udofia, and Miracle, all aged around 35 — were apprehended at Agbaje Camp while allegedly attempting to abduct residents. Another 13 suspects were paraded for offences such as theft, armed robbery, and violations of anti-grazing laws.
Adeleye credited the week-long operation “Le Won Jade”, which covered all 18 local government areas, with flushing criminals from forest hideouts and reducing clashes between farmers and herders.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that two university students have been detained over allegations of conspiracy and sexual assault involving a 20-year-old coursemate.
Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade said the suspects reportedly lured the victim to a residence, where she became incapacitated after consuming a drink later suspected to have been tampered with. She was rescued by a neighbour and taken to the hospital, where she remains under care.
The suspects are in custody pending further investigation by the Gender Desk Office in Akure.
