ABUJA, Nigeria – Parents crowded the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Bwari on Saturday after the Federal Government ordered the immediate shutdown of 47 Federal Unity Colleges amid rising security threats across the country.
The school’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Ali Ibrahim, confirmed the directive, describing the temporary closure as a necessary step to protect students.
“Following the directive from the Federal Government, the school is closing temporarily as part of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of our students,” he said.
By late morning, long lines of vehicles stretched across the school’s entrance as anxious parents arrived to pick up their children. Students sat on their luggage along the driveway, waiting to be collected. Staff members assisted with packing while security personnel coordinated the evacuation to prevent overcrowding at the gates.
The Federal Government has not released details of the specific threats prompting the closures. However, similar measures have previously followed intelligence warnings about potential attacks on boarding schools.
“This is not the first time we are panicking over our children’s safety,” said Mrs. Ruth Adeyemi, whose daughter is in SS2. “We just want a lasting solution.”
Classes are expected to resume once the security situation stabilises.
