ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is warning parents and retailers after Chad bans Bledine Infant Cereals for containing dangerous levels of Aflatoxin B1, a recognised carcinogen.
In Public Alert No. 038/2025, NAFDAC confirms receiving an official report that Danone’s cereal exceeded European safety limits. The agency says the toxin “is a known carcinogen and an immunotoxin that can trigger various immune system disorders.”
Authorities say informal trade routes may already have carried the banned products into Nigeria. “Further assessments show that the implicated Bledine products are circulating in Nigeria, particularly in border communities with Chad,” NAFDAC warns.
The agency urges immediate discontinuation of the cereal and calls on health workers and retailers to intensify vigilance. It instructs caregivers to report any adverse reactions via its nearest office or digital platforms.
NAFDAC says investigations and market surveillance are underway to determine the scale of distribution and ensure the unsafe cereal is withdrawn nationwide.
