ABUJA, Nigeria – An Abuja-based medical doctor, Dr. Chinonye Nwachukwu, has regained her freedom three weeks after she was abducted while travelling to work.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory chapter, confirmed her release late Sunday, stating that she was found in Gwagwalada and is now receiving medical care.
Dr. Nwachukwu, a Ukraine-trained physician with Garki Hospital, was kidnapped on October 21, sparking widespread concern among healthcare workers and prompting public appeals from the NMA-FCT for intensified rescue efforts.
NMA-FCT Chairman, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, described her return as a relief to the medical community. “After almost three weeks in captivity, Dr. Nwachukwu has been freed by her abductors. She was rescued safely and is currently receiving adequate medical attention,” he said.
He added that arrangements have begun for her to reunite with her family.
“We thank law enforcement agents and all who stood with us in prayers, solidarity, and support,” Ayogu noted. “This outcome is a collective victory for the NMA-FCT and Nigeria’s entire healthcare community.”
Dr. Ayogu emphasised hope that no NMA member will experience similar trauma again.
“We pray that affliction shall not rise a second time,” he said.
