AKUNGBA-AKOKO, Nigeria – Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University have been suspended after members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced an indefinite strike over two months of unpaid salaries.
The lecturers said the Ondo State Government has yet to pay their salaries for May and June 2026, prompting the union to withdraw its services until the outstanding arrears are settled.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ASUU Chairman at the university, Bolu Oshodi, said the decision followed resolutions adopted during congress meetings held on April 28, June 18 and July 10.
According to the union, the industrial action took effect at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, July 10, and covered all academic activities at the institution.
“The strike shall continue indefinitely until the outstanding salaries are fully paid,” the statement said.
ASUU said the decision became necessary after repeated efforts to secure payment of the salary arrears failed to yield results.
The union also disclosed that a National Visitation Team is expected at the university on Monday to engage stakeholders on issues relating to the implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government.
The strike leaves thousands of students without lectures, while academic activities remain suspended pending the resolution of the salary dispute.
The latest industrial action adds to concerns over funding and labour relations in Nigeria’s university system, where salary delays have frequently disrupted academic calendars.
