KANO, Nigeria – Panic has gripped the Yankwada community in Faruruwa, Shanono LGA of Kano State, after suspected bandits invaded the area, abducting five women and stealing livestock in a midnight attack lasting nearly 30 minutes.
Witnesses said the gunmen struck around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, firing sporadically as villagers fled into nearby bushes.
Village head Malam Mujittafa Abubakar Lawan confirmed the incident, blaming poor access roads for delayed police response.
“They kidnapped five women and took our cows,” he said. “One man was shot and taken to hospital.”
A resident said security arrived after the attackers had fled. “It was terrifying. Families ran for their lives,” he recounted.
Police spokesman SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said he was contacting the divisional DPO for a full briefing, while attempts to reach Shanono LGA Chairman Abubakar Barau were unsuccessful.
The raid underscores worsening insecurity in rural Kano, where communities face increasing spillover attacks from neighbouring states.
