ABUJA, Nigeria – Germany and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have renewed their long-standing partnership with a fresh commitment to deepen cooperation in peace and security, governance reforms, health systems strengthening, and sustainable economic development across the sub-region.
Under the new cooperation package, the Government of Germany has pledged €49 million (₦82 billion) to support ECOWAS-led initiatives aimed at conflict prevention, crisis response, regional trade integration, and public health improvement.
The funding commitment followed bilateral negotiations on development cooperation held at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja on November 4 and 5, 2025.
A statement issued by the German Embassy in Abuja on Friday said the talks brought together senior officials from both sides, including Germany’s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Annett Günther, and Christoph Rauh, Director for Africa at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The ECOWAS delegation was led by Vice President Damtien Tchintchibidja, who reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to regional integration and stability in the face of political upheavals, security threats, and economic pressures.
The negotiations centred on key thematic areas underpinning the partnership:Peaceful and inclusive governance, regional market integration and trade,climate-resilient and renewable energy solutions, and disease surveillance and preparedness
The statement noted that both parties agreed to intensify support for African-led solutions, including institutional capacity-building and citizen engagement.
Tchintchibidja welcomed Germany’s consistent support, describing the partnership as “strategic and people-centred.”
The talks concluded with a joint affirmation of ECOWAS Vision 2050 and Germany’s Africa Strategy, geared toward a stable, prosperous, and integrated West Africa.
