ADAMAWA, Nigeria – A cholera outbreak in Mubi Local Government Area has killed at least 10 residents, triggering an intensified emergency response from the Adamawa State government and development partners.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Felix Tangwami, who confirmed the deaths on Wednesday in Yola, said all fatalities occurred before the patients could reach a health facility.
“Most of these deaths were preventable. Early treatment saves lives,” Tangwami said, urging residents to seek medical care immediately when symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting appear.
The state, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), has deployed epidemiologists, disease surveillance officers, and volunteer health workers to affected communities. So far, 25 patients are receiving treatment while others previously admitted have been discharged after undergoing hygiene and safe water education.
Health teams are conducting house-to-house sensitisation in high-risk areas where access to clean water remains limited. Local leaders have also been asked to mobilise residents to adopt safer hygiene practices.
“We are tracing households and monitoring water sources. Cholera is both preventable and treatable, but only when cases are reported early,” Tangwami said.
