OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has declared full support for the ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), urging the Federal Government to urgently address the union’s 19-point demands.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abeokuta on Tuesday, State Chairman Dr. Luqman Ogunjimi said the grievances reflect deep-rooted issues affecting medical training, staff welfare and the sustainability of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
“These demands are not just about doctors—they are about the survival of our health system,” he stressed.
Ogunjimi expressed concern that only one of the demands has been met since the strike began, calling the government’s response “concerning and insufficient.”
He appealed for prompt implementation to restore industrial harmony, warning that delays risk worsening brain drain and collapsing public hospitals.
The association also called for the payment of all outstanding allowances, including hazard and promotion arrears, reversal of unjust dismissals, and protection of professional career pathways within the sector. “Creating consultant cadres for non-medical personnel undermines global standards and could destabilise patient care,” Ogunjimi cautioned.
