LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike beginning November 1, 2025, after the Federal Government failed to meet its 30-day ultimatum on pending welfare and salary issues.
NARD President Dr Mohammad Suleiman confirmed the decision following a five-hour emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday.
“NEC has unanimously directed a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action,” Suleiman said. “The National Officers Committee will ensure full compliance and enforcement.”
The strike threatens to paralyse healthcare services across federal hospitals, as resident doctors form the backbone of clinical care nationwide.
NARD cited grievances including non-payment of arrears from salary reviews, unjust dismissals, excessive work hours, and the exclusion of house officers from the civil service scheme. The doctors also decried the failure to pay 2024 allowances and promotion arrears.
Suleiman urged members to sensitise the public and ensure patient handovers before the strike begins, vowing the union would “resist exploitative plans” by government or private actors.
“We have reported to NEC, and NEC has decided,” he stated.
The association stressed that its action aims to secure fair treatment and restore dignity to Nigeria’s medical professionals.
