ABUJA, Nigeria – More than 1.3 million people have applied for the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, with about ₦13.98 billion reportedly disbursed to training centres and trainees, the Ministry of Education has said.
Minister of Education Maruf Tunji Alausa disclosed the figures in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Ikharo Attah.
According to the ministry’s Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) portal, 160,000 young Nigerians have been matched with training opportunities, while payments to training centres and trainees are continuing.
The TVET programme offers tuition-free vocational training and monthly stipends to eligible participants, with the aim of equipping young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
It is a key component of NESRI, a six-pillar reform initiative designed to expand access to education, improve learning outcomes and strengthen skills development. “These initiatives are opening new opportunities for young Nigerians, strengthening teaching and learning, and positioning education as a driver of skills, innovation and national development,” Alausa said.
Other components of the initiative include the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure, which aims to improve education data management, and the EduRevamp teacher development platform.
The ministry said EduRevamp had recorded more than 51,500 registered teachers.
NESRI also includes increased investment in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences, alongside targeted support for out-of-school children and girls.
Alausa reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working with education stakeholders to expand access to education, strengthen vocational training and improve learning outcomes nationwide.
