Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele
The Federal Government has unveiled 65 investment projects valued at $78.5 billion under its Project Nigeria initiative, targeting key sectors of the economy as it seeks to attract domestic and foreign private capital.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this on Saturday during a briefing following Nigeria’s participation in the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.
Oyedele said the projects covered energy, transport, industry, mining, agriculture, health and services, adding that each was backed by feasibility studies and open to participation by local and international investors. “We have 65 investment projects worth $78.5 billion under the Project Nigeria initiative,” Oyedele said.
The minister said the government had received expressions of interest from investors in Asia and Europe, describing the initiative as part of efforts to position Nigeria as a competitive investment destination.
He also said the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Islamic Development Bank, United States Treasury and European Union had indicated continued technical and financing support in key areas.
However, no immediate cash commitments from the institutions were announced, and the government did not disclose the names of the 65 projects, their individual costs or the expected implementation timelines in the information provided.
The initiative is intended to mobilise private investment across sectors considered important to economic growth, infrastructure development and employment creation. Its success will depend partly on whether expressions of interest translate into financing agreements, project implementation and measurable economic benefits.
The scale of the proposed investment portfolio makes details about project selection, financing arrangements and delivery timelines important to assessing its potential impact.
The government is expected to provide further information on the individual projects and the mechanisms through which investors can participate.
