ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency has rearrested an 83-year-old woman in Abia State, barely a year after she was convicted of drug-related offences, as officers also reported major drug interceptions at airports in Rivers and Lagos states.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said Uloma Uchechi Sunday was arrested on Wednesday, 7 October, at her residence in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
According to the agency, officers recovered consignments of methamphetamine and Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid, allegedly tied around her waist with a wrapper.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy Femi Babafemi said the arrest followed intelligence indicating that the residence was being used as a drug joint allegedly frequented by people linked to criminal activity in the community. Babafemi said Sunday had previously been arrested at the same residence on 17 May 2025 alongside her 32-year-old daughter, Chisom Uchechi.
During that operation, officers recovered 50 grammes of methamphetamine, 522 grammes of skunk, 260 grammes of fresh cannabis leaves and 12 grammes of tramadol, according to the agency. The NDLEA said both women pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment or a fine of ₦200,000 each. They paid the fines and were released.
The agency alleged that Sunday returned to drug trafficking after her release and subsequently established a drug joint at the residence. The latest allegations have not been tested in court.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives at Port Harcourt International Airport in Omagwa, Rivers State, arrested a South African woman, Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie, over an alleged attempt to smuggle 30 parcels of Thai Loud, a cannabis strain, weighing 32.74 kilogrammes.
