Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government and Lagos State Government have agreed to launch a pilot 24/7 Energy Zone in Lagos to improve electricity supply to homes, businesses and industries.
The agreement followed a technical meeting on Monday between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at Lagos House, Marina.
Tegbe said electricity distribution companies had committed to taking more power and delivering more reliable electricity along the Lagos corridor.
The initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, will begin in Lagos before expanding to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors, targeting areas with high commercial and industrial demand.
The minister said the Federal Ministry of Power would work with Lagos State on four priority areas: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonisation.
He said the objective was to remove constraints preventing available electricity from reaching consumers reliably.
Sanwo-Olu welcomed the initiative, saying the Federal Government had demonstrated its willingness to address longstanding challenges in the electricity sector.
The governor said Lagos needed “pragmatic solutions” that would create a bankable, collaborative and competitive electricity market.
The meeting also agreed to establish a joint technical committee to resolve outstanding technical and operational challenges and recommend steps for implementing the 24/7 Energy Zone.
The committee will report to a steering committee headed by Sanwo-Olu and co-chaired by Tegbe.
Members include the Special Adviser to the President on Power, Dr Lanre Babalola; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Mahmuda Mamman; and Lagos Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye.
The development followed an engagement between Tegbe and selected electricity distribution companies the previous week on the Energy Zones.
