EKITI, Nigeria – The Ekiti State Government has begun a pilot scheme to cut transport fares by 50 per cent with the deployment of 15 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses across the state.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji flagged off the buses on Thursday at the Ekiti State Transportation Agency in Ado-Ekiti as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary and the 30th anniversary of Ekiti State.
The buses were donated to Ekiti by the Federal Government as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and expand access to affordable public transport.
Oyebanji, who was accompanied by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, said the deployment was the state’s initial step towards reducing the financial burden of transportation on residents.
“The President charged all state governors that by October first, we should find a way of reducing transportation costs because most of the implications we are witnessing, transportation contributes a lot to it,” Oyebanji said. “What we have done today is just the pilot: 15 CNG buses, which are going to be distributed to the unions, and the agency will manage it.”
