ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warns the Federal Government that failure to honour its agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may ignite a nationwide labour action.
In a statement on Monday, NLC President, Joe Ajaero said the two-week warning strike by lecturers is a direct response to “broken promises and years of neglect.”
“The lecturers are ready to work,” Ajaero said. “But the government’s refusal to implement its commitments makes that impossible. No pay, no work — and certainly no intimidation.”
The NLC accused the government of “deliberately collapsing public education” while the elite sent their children abroad. It described the standoff as “a battle for the soul of Nigeria’s education.”
Ajaero urged authorities to suspend threats and return to negotiations, warning that the NLC “will not be idle spectators” if the impasse persists beyond the two-week deadline.
“The fight for public education is the fight for Nigeria’s future,” he said. “The government has two weeks to act or face the united force of Nigerian workers.”
