ABUJA, Nigeria — Vice President Kashim Shettima will represent Nigeria and lead the country’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
The Presidency announced the decision on Sunday through the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.
Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate, which runs from September 22 to 28 under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The UN confirms that the General Debate will hold from September 22 to 26 and on September 28.
In his address, Shettima is expected to outline Nigeria’s position on issues including peace and security, economic growth, sustainable development and international cooperation.
He will also participate in high-level meetings on the right to development, climate action and other issues of strategic importance to Nigeria and Africa. The UN’s official programme lists high-level meetings on the right to development and climate action among events scheduled during the week.
The Vice President is also scheduled to attend the traditional reception for heads of delegation and hold bilateral meetings with foreign leaders, international organisations and development partners.
According to Nkwocha, the engagements will give Nigeria an opportunity to advance the economic diplomacy of the Tinubu administration and strengthen strategic partnerships.
“The engagements will provide Nigeria an opportunity to advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy, deepen strategic partnerships and strengthen the country’s voice on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation,” he said.
The 81st UN General Assembly brings together world leaders and senior representatives to discuss global challenges, including peace, security, development and climate action.
