ABUJA, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike, effectively shutting down academic activities in all public universities across Nigeria.
The union’s National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the decision during a press conference on Sunday at the University of Abuja, following the expiration of the 14-day notice issued to the Federal Government.
“There has been no meaningful progress or response from the relevant authorities to avert this industrial action,” Professor Piwuna stated.
He explained that the 14-day ultimatum, which began on September 28, 2025, had lapsed without concrete engagement from government representatives. Consequently, all ASUU branches nationwide have been directed to fully withdraw their services beginning midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025.
“The strike is both total and comprehensive, in line with the resolution of our National Executive Council (NEC) meeting,” he added.
Professor Piwuna stressed that the decision reflects lecturers’ frustration over unmet commitments on university funding, earned allowances, and salary arrears. He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to dialogue but warned that continued government inaction could escalate the situation beyond the initial two-week warning.
“ASUU remains open to genuine negotiation, but this time, our patience has worn thin,” Piwuna said.
