LAGOS, Nigeria – The BRICON Foundation has urged cancer patients and survivors to embrace life beyond diagnosis, treatment and surgery, stressing the importance of hope, support and meaningful living after cancer.
The foundation’s Co-founder, Mrs Abigail Simon-Hart, made the call during the organisation’s 10th anniversary celebration at Eko Hotel, Lagos, on Saturday.
Simon-Hart, a breast cancer survivor who founded the organisation with Dr Niyi Adekeye in 2016, said surviving cancer should mark the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope, purpose and possibilities.
“Survivors need positive reinforcement and support structures to help them move forward after cancer. I know the importance of being with other cancer survivors and support systems to start life afresh.”
The foundation also supports children of cancer survivors through scholarships, while other interventions include food-bank donations and practical assistance to families affected by cancer.
“Over the years, we have been able to alleviate the financial and emotional burdens associated with cancer for women that have come in contact with our foundation.”
More than 100 cancer survivors participated in activities organised to mark the foundation’s 10th anniversary.
Simon-Hart said the anniversary gave survivors an opportunity to relax, connect with one another, share experiences and celebrate life away from the challenges associated with cancer.
“This anniversary availed survivors the opportunity to hang out with fellow survivors, share their stories, get encouraged and celebrate being alive.”
Simon-Hart, who was diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago, said her personal experience had deepened her understanding of the importance of survivor support.
“Having cancer should not prevent anyone from continuing to live meaningfully. Cancer is not a death sentence; you have to speak out to get help on time.”
