Tinubu Commissions N1bn ICT Centre at UNICROSS to Boost Digital Learning

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned a N1 billion Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Digital Experience Centre at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Calabar, to improve students’ access to digital learning and technology-driven education.

The facility, delivered under the Renewed Hope Initiative in partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is designed to provide students with laptops, desktop computers and other digital resources, particularly benefiting those who cannot afford personal devices.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at the university’s main campus on Friday, Tinubu said the centre would bridge the digital divide by enabling students to acquire technology skills without being hindered by the high cost of digital devices or unreliable electricity supply.

She explained that the project forms part of a broader national initiative being implemented across selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to strengthen digital education and innovation.

Chairman of the TETFund Board of Trustees, Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari, said UNICROSS was selected as the South-South beneficiary under the Fund’s 2024 intervention programme.

According to him, TETFund approved the establishment of one ICT Digital Experience Centre in each of the six geopolitical zones, with N1 billion allocated to each facility.

Masari noted that the centres would expose students and academic staff to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics and software development, while also supporting research and innovation across critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, security, media and mining.

He added that the initiative would enhance graduate employability by equipping students with practical digital competencies needed in today’s technology-driven economy.

Also speaking, TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono urged the university management to ensure proper maintenance and security of the facility while regularly upgrading its equipment.
