ENUGU, Nigeria – Students in an abandoned Enugu school continue to learn in unsafe classrooms surrounded by collapsing buildings more than a decade after the facility was reportedly neglected, raising fresh concerns over infrastructure and safety in public schools.
The deteriorating condition of the school came to light on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, revealing classrooms with cracked walls, damaged structures and sections of the building that have already collapsed.
The school is reported to have been abandoned by the Enugu State Government since 2015, leaving students and teachers to operate in an environment increasingly considered unsafe.
Several parts of the facility show severe structural damage, while other sections continue to deteriorate because of years of neglect and the absence of rehabilitation work.
The condition of the school has renewed concerns over the safety of students, teachers and other staff who continue to use the premises despite the visible risk posed by the failing structures.
Parents and community members have also expressed concerns that children are being forced to study in classrooms that no longer provide a safe environment for learning.
Education stakeholders say access to quality education must include safe and functional school infrastructure, warning that deteriorating public facilities could undermine learning outcomes and expose pupils to avoidable dangers.
The discovery has also renewed calls for the Enugu State Government to conduct an immediate structural assessment of the school and begin rehabilitation or reconstruction of buildings that are no longer fit for use.
Experts argue that prolonged neglect of public-school infrastructure not only affects teaching and learning but also threatens the wellbeing of students and teachers.
