ABUJA – The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the death of its Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, describing his passing as a significant loss to the commission and Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Adelayo Olurode.
According to the statement, Yusuf died in Abuja after a brief illness at the age of 66.
The late chairman, who held the traditional title of Talban Wushishi, was sworn into office as the eighth substantive Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Tinubu on December 3, 2025.
During his tenure, he championed a Seven-Point Agenda aimed at repositioning the commission and strengthening Nigeria’s demographic data management system.
Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Yusuf had a distinguished public service career spanning education, grassroots governance and public administration.
Before his appointment to the NPC, he served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.
He also served as National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna, and Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.
Olurode described Yusuf as a committed public servant whose dedication to national development and reliable population data remained unwavering.
“The commission has lost a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator and a compassionate leader whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering,” she said.
The NPC extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government, the Government and people of Niger State, and the late chairman’s family.
