DAMATURU, Nigeria – A deadly pre-dawn ambush by Boko Haram insurgents on a military outpost in Ngamdu, along the Damaturu–Maiduguri highway in Borno State, has left four soldiers dead and five others wounded.
The assault, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, disrupted vehicular movement for hours as troops of Operation Hadin Kai battled fiercely to repel the attackers.
According to military officials, the insurgents launched a coordinated assault using rocket-propelled grenades, armed drones, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in an attempt to overrun the base.
However, reinforcements from the 29 Task Force Brigade arrived swiftly, forcing the militants to retreat after a heavy exchange of gunfire.
Spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Uba Sani, praised the troops’ resilience, saying: “Despite the intensity of the attack, our men stood firm and responded with superior firepower. Sadly, four soldiers were killed and five injured, but the terrorists suffered major losses.”
He added that the insurgents planted several IEDs along the Ngamdu–Damaturu route to block reinforcements, prompting engineers to conduct clearance operations before reopening the highway. Intelligence reports later confirmed that about 15 insurgents were buried near Bula Wura village after the clash.
Transporter Muktar Yahaya of Borno Express said many buses were trapped during the operation, as the military conducted security sweeps and reopened the road by morning.
Security officials said logistics and ammunition have been resupplied to sustain counterterrorism operations in the volatile Ngamdu corridor.
