ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast three days of cloudy weather, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday, urging residents to take precautionary measures against severe weather conditions.
In its latest three-day weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet said northern, North Central and southern states would experience varying degrees of rainfall and thunderstorms, with strong winds likely to precede some storms.
The agency said the northern region would begin Sunday with sunny skies and patches of clouds, while early morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba and Adamawa. It added that moderate rainfall and thunderstorms would become more widespread later in the day.
For the North Central region, NiMet predicted partly cloudy conditions with chances of early morning thunderstorms over Kwara, Niger, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are also expected across several locations.
In southern Nigeria, the agency forecast cloudy conditions with light morning rainfall over parts of Oyo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom, followed by moderate rainfall across states in the South-West, South-East and South-South later in the day.
According to NiMet, similar weather patterns are expected on Monday and Tuesday, with thunderstorms continuing across parts of the North and North Central, while southern states are likely to experience persistent cloud cover and rainfall.
The agency warned that strong winds could occur before thunderstorms in some affected areas, increasing the risk of damage to unsecured structures.
NiMet advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall where possible and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of electrical hazards.
