ABUJA, Nigeria – The China Nigeria grant receives a major boost as the Chinese government approves a RMB200 million grant to support jointly agreed development projects, reinforcing economic and diplomatic cooperation between Beijing and Abuja.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai announces the funding during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Dunoma Umar Ahmed, in Abuja on Thursday as both countries commemorate 55 years of diplomatic relations.
According to Dunhai, the grant forms part of China’s continued support for Nigeria’s national development and will finance projects mutually identified by both governments.
“The grant is part of China’s continued support for Nigeria’s national development and economic growth and will be used for projects jointly agreed by our two governments,” Dunhai says.
The ambassador notes that China-Nigeria relations continue to expand, describing the partnership as a key component of China’s broader engagement with Africa.
He says both countries are working to implement agreements reached by their leaders, including commitments made during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.
Responding, Ahmed thanked the Chinese government for the financial support, describing the grant as evidence of the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.
He assures that Nigeria will ensure the funds are properly utilised while continuing to work closely with China to implement existing bilateral agreements.
The China Nigeria grant comes amid expanding cooperation in infrastructure development, trade, investment and development financing. Both governments say they remain committed to translating bilateral agreements into projects that deliver measurable benefits for citizens and strengthen long-term economic cooperation.
