BENUE, Nigeria – The Benue newborn baby recovery records a breakthrough after the Benue State Police Command recovers a baby boy allegedly stolen from his mother at a healthcare facility in Gboko and arrests suspects linked to the incident.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Peter Aondona confirmed the recovery to journalists on Thursday, saying officers located the newborn during an overnight operation.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) at midnight, we recovered the baby and the baby is at the division now,” Aondona says.
The baby is reportedly delivered on Tuesday, August 11, but disappears just hours after birth.
According to reports, the newborn initially experiences breathing difficulties and does not cry after delivery until a nurse stabilises him. After mother and baby are transferred to the ward, a woman allegedly posing as a nurse request to examine the infant.
The mother reportedly hands over the baby before the suspect leaves towards the labour room. The family later discovers the child is missing, prompting panic at the hospital and the deployment of security personnel.
Aondona says the case is first reported at the A Division Police Station in Gboko before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
He confirms that suspects have been arrested but says police will disclose the number and identities of those involved after preliminary investigations.
“The baby is at the division now,” he reiterates.
The police say investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction and identify anyone else connected to the case.
