ABUJA, Nigeria – The agricultural curricula review takes a major step forward as the Federal Government adopts an 80 per cent practical and 20 per cent theoretical training model for tertiary institutions to equip Nigerian youths with industry-relevant agricultural skills.
Minister of Education Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa announced the policy on Thursday while receiving the report of the National Implementation Committee on the Review and Development of Agricultural Curricula for Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.
“The shift to 80 per cent practical training is a major step towards equipping Nigerian youths with relevant skills and advancing the economic objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Alausa says.
The minister explains that the revised curriculum replaces the previous structure of 70 per cent theory and 30 per cent practical training, providing students with greater hands-on experience needed for careers in agriculture.
Presenting the report, NBTE Executive Secretary Prof. Idris Muhammad Bugaje says the exercise produced 36 new and revised National Diploma and Higher National Diploma curricula, three Nigeria Certificate in Education curricula and 31 National Occupational Standards.
According to Bugaje, 27 occupational standards were developed from scratch, while four existing standards were reviewed and approved by the relevant regulatory authorities.
