LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government says it is accelerating the rehabilitation of major water infrastructure under its Lagos Water Renewal Programme to improve potable water supply and tackle persistent water scarcity across the state.
The Lagos Water Renewal Programme includes the installation of new pumping equipment at the Iju and Akute Waterworks to increase production capacity.
Managing Director of the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), Engr. Mukhtaar Temitope Tijani, gave the update on Wednesday during an inspection of ongoing rehabilitation works at the Iju Headworks.
Tijani said six new clear-water pumps and a new pump head are being installed to replace aging equipment at the Iju Waterworks.
“The work is progressing steadily. We are pleased with the progress we have made so far. Procurement has been completed, all the equipment has been delivered to the site, and installation is progressing as scheduled,” he said.
He disclosed that Akute Waterworks will also receive two new raw-water pumps with a combined capacity of 24 million gallons per day, expected to arrive before the end of August.
Tijani commended project contractor KSB Pumps for maintaining the project’s schedule.
“We look forward to the successful completion of this project so we can return the plant to producing more water for the residents of Lagos State,” he said.
Project Manager of KSB Pumps, Engr. John Adetayo Gbadegesin, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to completing the rehabilitation before the end of the year.
“The essence of this project is to ensure that Iju Waterworks is brought back to life and improve the supply of potable water to Lagos residents,” he said.
Gbadegesin added that the contractor was working to ensure Lagos residents begin benefiting from improved water supply once the project is completed.
