ABIA, Nigeria – The Abia State Government has launched a digital pregnancy tracking application, CyTracker, to identify high-risk pregnancies early and help reduce maternal and child deaths.
The Abia high-risk pregnancy tracker is designed to monitor pregnant teenagers, women who miss antenatal appointments and expectant mothers who rely on unskilled traditional birth attendants, the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Uche Enoch, says.
Enoch discloses the initiative at the post-executive council briefing on Monday, describing it as part of broader efforts to tackle maternal mortality in the state.
“We are looking at comprehensive measures to eliminate maternal mortality,” he says.
According to the commissioner, CyTracker uses information including a woman’s age and last menstrual period to assess pregnancy risks, calculate expected delivery dates and send reminders for antenatal appointments.
“Two days to antenatal care, it tells you that you should come for antenatal care. Or send it to that person if you don’t have a phone,” Enoch says.
The system also allows health workers to follow up with women who miss appointments and monitor them as they approach delivery, helping to identify cases that may require urgent medical intervention.
Enoch says the application has already been used to monitor teenage pregnancies that resulted in successful deliveries at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
The commissioner urges pregnant women to enrol in Abia’s health insurance scheme, which he says provides free maternal healthcare, including Caesarean sections when medically required.
“All pregnant women in this state are entitled to free maternal services and free delivery, up to cesarean delivery,” Enoch says.
He describes CyTracker as an “Abia-born” solution developed to address the state’s maternal health challenges.
The initiative places digital monitoring at the centre of efforts to identify pregnancies requiring closer medical supervision and ensure women receive timely antenatal and delivery care.
