DUTSE, Nigeria – The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the establishment of a State Standing Committee on Nutrition to strengthen coordination of nutrition programmes and accelerate efforts to reduce malnutrition, particularly among women and children.
The decision was announced on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa, while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Dutse.
Musa said the committee would provide strategic leadership for nutrition interventions, improve collaboration among ministries and agencies, and ensure a coordinated approach to tackling nutrition challenges across the state.
According to him, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of residents through stronger inter-sectoral collaboration.
He noted that nutrition is a cross-cutting issue requiring the active involvement of sectors including health, agriculture, water resources, environment, local government, women affairs and budget planning.
“The committee will coordinate nutrition-related programmes, provide policy direction and oversee the planning and implementation of interventions aimed at reducing malnutrition across Jigawa State,” Musa said.
He explained that special attention would be given to improving nutrition outcomes for women and children, who remain the most vulnerable to the effects of malnutrition.
The committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdullahi Kainuwa, while members include the commissioners responsible for Water Resources, Environment, Local Government, Women Affairs and Budget, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Nutrition and the Director-General of the Jigawa Agricultural Transformation Agency.
Musa added that the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Agency will serve as secretary to the committee and coordinate its activities to ensure effective implementation of government nutrition policies.
