ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria Libya security cooperation has been strengthened as both countries agreed to deepen diplomatic and security collaboration to combat insecurity across the Sahel, curb irregular migration and address other shared regional challenges.
The agreement was reached on Thursday during a high-level bilateral meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, and Libya’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Taher Elbaour, held on the sidelines of official engagements.
The ministers reviewed growing security threats across the Sahel and agreed that stronger cross-border partnerships are essential to tackling terrorism, organised crime, irregular migration and other humanitarian challenges affecting the region.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to working more closely on practical initiatives that will strengthen regional peace, stability and diplomatic relations.
The discussions focused on improving the management of irregular migration, a persistent challenge affecting countries across Africa and the Mediterranean, while exploring coordinated responses that protect vulnerable migrants and enhance border security.
The ministers also examined mechanisms for improving cooperation on prisoner transfers in line with international legal standards and existing bilateral agreements.
“The two Ministers underscored the importance of enhanced collaboration in addressing irregular migration and promoting regional peace and stability. They also agreed to sustain close diplomatic engagement in advancing shared security and humanitarian objectives.”
The renewed partnership comes as countries across the Sahel continue to confront escalating insecurity, terrorism, transnational crime and humanitarian crises that have displaced millions and heightened pressure on migration routes into North Africa and Europe.
