RIYOM, Nigeria – A Plateau attack leaves eight people dead and one injured after gunmen raid Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area, prompting security forces to launch a large-scale manhunt for the attackers.
The assault occurs at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday when heavily armed assailants storm the community, open fire on residents and flee before security personnel arrive.
Troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), respond immediately after receiving a distress call and find eight villagers dead at the scene. One survivor with gunshot wounds was evacuated to the General Hospital in Riyom for emergency treatment.
“Troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), who responded immediately after receiving a distress report, arrived at the scene to find eight villagers already killed, while one survivor had sustained gunshot wounds,” the security report states.
Security forces have since deployed additional personnel to the affected community and surrounding areas to reassure residents and prevent further attacks.
Military sources say clearance operations are ongoing in nearby villages and forests as troops pursue the fleeing gunmen and intensify efforts to dismantle criminal hideouts.
The latest Plateau attack adds to a series of deadly assaults recorded in Riyom, Bokkos and Mangu local government areas in recent months, despite ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace.
The recurring violence has heightened concerns among farming communities, many of whom continue to live under the threat of armed attacks.
Security officials say intelligence-led operations, community collaboration and sustained surveillance remain central to efforts to arrest the perpetrators and improve security across Plateau State.
