LAGOS, Nigeria – The FAAN airport taxi policy does not require operators to replace their vehicles with 2020 models before continuing operations at Nigerian airports, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said, dismissing claims circulating on social media as false.
The clarification follows a viral video in which some airport taxi drivers appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that a new FAAN policy would compel them to purchase vehicles costing between ₦18 million and ₦30 million.
Responding to the claims on Friday, FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Adebola Agunbiade, said the controversy stemmed from resistance by some operators to register under the Airport Car Hire Rank Management System (ACHRAMS).
“It is incorrect to say that FAAN asked drivers to change their vehicles to a minimum of the 2020 model because of the introduction of ACHRAMS. One of the conditions for registration is that drivers must operate vehicles manufactured in 2012 or above,” she said.
She said the compliance deadline, initially scheduled for January 1, 2026, was extended to June and later moved to October 1, 2026, to allow operators additional time to comply.
She also rejected reports that FAAN intends to remove 60 per cent of airport taxi operators under the digital management system.
“The intention is to clear all drivers, provided they comply with the laid-down standards,” Agunbiade said.
According to her, most airport taxi operators at Murtala Muhammed International Airport have already enrolled on ACHRAMS, while only two companies have yet to register following advice from their union.
Agunbiade further disclosed that FAAN is finalising agreements with Uber and Bolt to integrate their services into the digital platform.
Until the process is completed, she said e-hailing operators remain temporarily unauthorised to pick up passengers directly from airport terminals.
