Executive Secretary, UBEC, Aisha Garba
ABUJA, Nigeria – UBEC education grants worth more than ₦100 billion have been released to states and the Federal Capital Territory to accelerate improvements in Nigeria’s basic education system, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) says.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Aisha Garba, announced the release on Thursday during a media briefing with education correspondents in Abuja. She said the funds, which had remained unclaimed for years, are now being invested in school infrastructure, teacher development and initiatives designed to improve learning outcomes across the country.
Garba said the intervention forms part of UBEC’s renewed commitment to implementing its 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint, which seeks to deliver measurable improvements in access to quality basic education nationwide.
According to her, the UBEC education grants are already financing major projects across Nigeria, including the construction of more than 4,600 classrooms, the renovation of over 6,100 classrooms, the installation of 2,780 toilets and 678 boreholes, and the provision of more than 334,000 pieces of school furniture.
She added that UBEC has established more than 2,300 Early Childhood Care Development and Education Centres to expand access to quality learning opportunities for young children.
Garba said teacher development remains central to the commission’s education reforms, revealing that UBEC has invested more than ₦20.4 billion in professional training programmes aimed at improving classroom instruction, strengthening school leadership and enhancing accountability.
The commission is also expanding technology-based learning through the establishment of Digital Literacy Centres and Smart Schools, while introducing artificial intelligence, coding and robotics into basic education.
Garba said more than 7.8 million instructional materials have been distributed to schools nationwide to improve literacy and numeracy among pupils.
